Professor David Felce
Welsh Centre for Learning Disabilities, School of Medicine,
Cardiff University

My name is Professor David Felce and I am the Co-chair of the LDIAG. My first research post (1973-86) was at the University of Southampton, working with Dr Albert Kushlick on the quality of residential services for people with severe or profound learning disabilities. I began my career by evaluating some of the first attempts in Britain to provide accommodation in the community for children and adults living in long-stay institutional provision. I then went on to develop and evaluate staffed housing for adults with severe and profound learning disabilities, including those with challenging behaviour, working with Judith Jenkins and Jim Mansell.

After three years as the Director of the British Institute of Mental Handicap, I was then appointed to my current role as Director of the Welsh Centre for Learning Disabilities at Cardiff University. In recent years I have carried out research with Mike Kerr to evaluate the benefits of health checks.

On a personal note, I am married with two grown-up children, two grandchildren and a cat. I like music and reading. My wife and I sing in the Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society which gives concerts in the Cathedral three times a year. We also like walking in the Lake District and doing a bit of scrambling. I also play tennis, squash and am learning to play golf, but I need more time.
